Remote job interview questions could be different from the usual physical interview questions you’re used to. Employers are more intentional and look for people who can work with little or no supervision, communicate effectively, and have the essential soft skills for remote working.

To better prepare for your next interview, here are seven remote job interview questions to look out for:

1.  How do you minimize distractions and build productivity?

With so much flexibility in time, it is easy to lose track of different tasks and responsibilities. However, it is essential to show the company that you are up to the task. The interviewer needs to know how you sieve through the distractions at home, how you can fight the urge to sleep or watch movies, how you schedule your tasks effectively to achieve productivity.

With your answer, you can take the interviewer through your typical day; highlighting your scheduling tools, breaks, and what you do to boost your productivity and stay alert.

2.   How will you communicate effectively?

While this may be a question you have heard before, most wor-related problems stem from inadequate communication or none. Remote job interview questions test to see how you can virtually achieve the company’s goals with minimal issues. 

Here, a well thought out answer with examples will help the interviewer see that you understand the need to communicate. You can talk about your favourite chat/communication tools or how scheduled check-ins are helpful.

3. How does your vision align with ours?

This question probably falls into the category of remote job interview questions that you also hear at physical interviews. As in the latter, this question seeks to make sure that your career goals align with the teams’ mission so that all staff members connect to the core. 

To correctly answer this question, you would need to have read about the company and what they are trying to achieve, then plug in how that works into your overall career goals.

4. What concerns you about remote working?

While the default answer may be to say that remote working is perfect; because isn’t it? Not having any concerns may come off as unreal. Different setbacks are peculiar to remote working such as internet downtimes, managing distractions and being unmotivated. So, share real problems backed with how you will compensate. If you talk about internet downtimes, you could follow it up with how you have different wifi devices that substitute, so it does not affect work.

5. What skills are necessary to successfully thrive in a remote job?

This question may come off as a tricky one because the skills needed for a remote job may not necessarily be the same skills for the role. With this in mind, one needs to find a balance that the interviewer can grasp. Here, share soft skills that help the interviewer see your level of independence, collaboration and organization. 

6.  What do you do to maintain a work-life balance?

Companies want to know that you are not suffering from burnout and still want to know you’re not playing around with your duties. The keyword here is balance.

While you may want to say all the ways you find time to rest, don’t go overboard into allowing the interviewer to lose faith in your ability to deliver. You can share the different ways you unwind after work and take short breaks in between tasks.

7. Something unexpected and unrelated, like what’s your favourite book(s) and why?

While this may feel irrelevant and unexpected, this is a culture-fit question and a way for interviewers to know how well you think on your feet. It may also help the company see your work-life balance. While there may be no wrong answers to this question, the best way to tackle this type of problem is by telling the truth.

In more ways than you know, a remote job interview is similar to a physical interview, except that you’re having a conversation through a screen.
